Multi-Zone Sound System for Aquatics Center
Description
The University of Virginia Aquatic & Fitness Center’s pool audio system was installed in 1996 when the building was first completed. The facility includes an Olympic-size competition pool, a diving area and a spectators' balcony. The original system consisted of three fully loaded 18-space racks, powering separate areas of the facility. The old-technology speakers made speech nearly unintelligible in this reverberant space, especially given their placement on the high ceiling nearly 30 feet above the pool deck.
We recommended replacement of all out-dated equipment with a redesign focusing on a system of newer technology to provide focused sound to the key listening areas within the pool space. We designed a four-zoned system, with a multi-zone mixer to distinct areas: two sides of the main Pool Decks (used mainly for music during public swimming), for the Spectator's Balcony and the Diving Area. We developed a suspended rod system which lowered the speakers as close to listeners as possible. This newer technology and straight-forward, integrated design, creates a new system that fits easily in less than a third of the space required by the original equipment. The system also allows for each zone to be equalized for maximum clarity, for CD, DVD and AM/FM radio system, as well as wired and wireless microphones.
